What Is AVIF?
AVIF is a newer image format that makes image files much smaller without losing visible quality. It was built on the same technology behind modern video streaming. Companies like Google, Netflix, and Apple have all adopted AVIF because it produces sharper images at a fraction of the file size compared to traditional formats like JPEG and PNG.
Why Convert to AVIF?
Your pages load faster. Smaller images mean your website downloads quicker. If your site has a lot of images (product photos, blog posts, portfolios), switching to AVIF can cut the total image size in half or more. That directly improves your Google PageSpeed score and how fast visitors see your content.
Images look better at smaller sizes. Compared to JPEG or WebP, AVIF does a better job preserving detail when you compress an image. Smooth gradients, skin tones, and textures all look cleaner with fewer of the blocky artifacts you sometimes see in heavily compressed JPEGs.
Most browsers already support it. Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari can all display AVIF images. That covers over 95% of web traffic, so most of your visitors will see AVIF images without any issues.
How to Use This Tool
Drop or select an image in any common format (PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF) up to 10 MB. If your image is larger than 4096 pixels on any side, the tool will automatically scale it down. Everything runs in your browser, so nothing gets uploaded to a server.
Adjust the quality slider to control the balance between file size and image quality. A setting between 60 and 75 works well for most web images. Lower numbers make smaller files. Higher numbers keep more detail.
Use the comparison slider to drag back and forth between the original and the converted version. This lets you see exactly where quality differences appear so you can pick the right setting for your image.
Browser Compatibility
All major browsers can display AVIF images. Chrome and Edge added support in 2020, Firefox in 2021, and Safari in 2022. You can check the latest browser support data on Can I Use.
For the small percentage of visitors on older browsers, you can use the HTML <picture> element to automatically serve a WebP or JPEG version instead. Most content delivery networks and WordPress image plugins handle this for you.
AVIF vs WebP
Both AVIF and WebP produce smaller files than JPEG, but AVIF compresses more aggressively. AVIF typically reduces file sizes by 50-80%, while WebP achieves 25-35%. AVIF also handles photos with smooth color transitions and fine textures better at low quality settings.
The trade-off is speed. AVIF takes longer to encode, especially for large images. WebP converts almost instantly. If you need the smallest possible file and don’t mind waiting a few seconds, AVIF is the better choice. If speed and simplicity matter more, try our WebP converter.
